Every course begins with a doctor's assessment. Redness, uneven tone and pigment can look alike and respond to different tools — the assessment decides whether broadband light is the right one for your skin, and at which settings.

Broadband light delivers a range of wavelengths rather than a single one. Filters select the band that matches what is being treated — shorter wavelengths are absorbed more by surface pigment, longer wavelengths reach vessels that cause visible redness.

The targeted structure absorbs the light and heats preferentially, while the surrounding skin absorbs comparatively little. Treated pigment darkens and flakes away over the following days; treated vessels shrink.

Because it treats an area rather than a single mark, it is generally used where the concern is overall tone and condition rather than one specific spot. That also makes it a maintenance treatment: it is run as a course and repeated periodically, not booked once.

It can also be used as an added step inside a longer appointment. Light needs no numbing and leaves no wound, so it can follow a treatment that has already cleansed or resurfaced the surface — a facial or a superficial peel, with the light then working on tone and vessels in the same visit. Not every combination is appropriate on the same day, and the pairing is set at your assessment rather than proposed once you are already in the room.

• The system combines intense pulsed light with a skin-tightening handpiece, and carries eight filtered treatment heads, so the wavelength band is matched to the indication rather than one setting being used for everything.

• Treated pigment usually gets darker for several days before it flakes off. This is the expected sequence, not a bad reaction.
• Light-based treatments are less suitable on recently tanned skin. Avoid sun exposure before your appointment.
• You will wear eye shields throughout. The flashes are bright even with eyes closed.
• This is a gradual, cumulative treatment rather than a single dramatic session.
• Added to another treatment, it is a shorter step inside that appointment — not a second full session. If redness or tone is your main concern, a standalone course is the more direct route and we will say so.

Broadband light treats a whole area across a range of wavelengths and is well suited to diffuse redness and general tone. A picosecond laser delivers a single wavelength in extremely short pulses and is better suited to defined pigment.

They are often used for different problems rather than as alternatives to each other.

Some combinations are not appropriate on the same day. What can be layered is decided by the doctor at your assessment, so you know what your session contains before you arrive.

Yes. Full face is the most common protocol, but it can also be planned per area on the body, where the concern is tone across a region rather than one defined mark.

Which areas are appropriate depends on what is driving the discolouration, and a course of superficial peels can be the more suitable route in some cases. The two are considered together at assessment rather than presented as competing options.

Your consultation will determine this. Skin type, medical history, medications and the changes you would like to see all affect which treatment is appropriate, and whether any treatment is suitable at all.

Your first visit includes a consultation where the doctor examines your skin and determines if this treatment is suitable for you before proceeding with any procedures. You don’t need to book the consultation separately.

If you prefer to come in solely for an assessment, our consultation charge is $80. However, if you decide to proceed with treatment on the same day, this fee will be waived.

The doctor will examine your skin, take your medical history and give you a detailed account of your skin condition, which may differ from your initial expectations.

You leave with a written plan and the associated costs. If a treatment isn’t suitable for you, you’ll be informed of that instead.

There’s no same-day price or deadline attached to the plan. Prices don’t change based on when you decide.
